I, Farm Boy! Chicken Could Adjust To Climatic Changes

The fourth batch of Manok Pinoy chicks which we brought up to Talakag, Bukidnon to be reared in the highlands has adjusted well to the colder climate.
Straight from the brooder where they were kept until all the vaccination programs were completed, this batch adapted easily to the new surroundings.
Acclimatization is a very important component in our study on free-range chicken farming in the highlands of Mindanao.
For so long, it has been assumed that chicken would not survive in the colder climate of the highlands.
I have always argued that chicken, just like humans, could adapt to a new environment and could survive very cold climate citing that in the US and Europe chickens go through harsh winters.
Along with the practical experiment on acclimatization, we have also started introducing feeds from available local materials.
In the Miarayon Experimental Farm, cracked corn and Carrot rejects are introduced to the chicks as early as three months old.
Again, this is another critical part of the study since many families in the highlands do not have access to commercially-processed feeds.
This study on Free-Range Chicken Farming in Mindanao Highlands is expected to address poverty and malnutrition among families in remote villages of Mindanao, especially the Indigenous People.
