There are two breeding systems which I use in the farm, the free-range breeding and confined breeding.
Both have advantages and disadvantages.
For free-range breeding, the farmer allows the chicken to just roam and run in the backyard or in a wide area enclosed by a fish net.
The fish net which mesures about 100 meter long and 12 feet high keeps the chicken in an area to make sure that they don’t lay eggs in areas where it could not be found.
The net also prevents predators from the attacking the chicken and predators could be dogs, cats, large lizards (halo), including the bald-headed homo sapien.
Breeding chicken in the free-range reduces feed cost as they are able to supplement whatever is given to them with insects, worms and grass. It also allows them access to minerals in the soil which only the chicken could identify.
The disadvantages of free-range breeding include the raids of black crows on the nests, difficulty in monitoring the health status of the chicken and the damage to eggs when the hens share common nests.
The worst time for free-range breeding is during the rainy season when hens climb up the nests with muddied feet which results in dirty eggs that cannot be hatched anymmore.
In isolated farm houses, however, free range breeding is still the best option.
