Every year, farmers lose billions of pesos to pesky insects which drill their needle-like snouts into fruits like Mango, Jackfruit, Banana and even Guava.
In the Mango industry, for example, farmers have to go through the tedious and difficult process of wrapping each fruit with paper.
The Banana industry spends hundreds of millions for the blue perforated plastic bags which are chemically treated to protect the fruits.
The Mango Industry’s export potentials had long been hampered by the presence of fruit flies in the country.
Research works on how to stop the fruit flies had been limited, if not totally inexistent.
We have so many outstanding Entomologists in the country who find a biological method of controlling, if not totally eradicating, fruit flies or fruit borers.
All that they need is support from our science research institutions to be able to do extensive research.
