Betamax and CDs may soon be a thing of the past in the fast-developing information and video technology but they are still useful to rice farmers faced with problems caused by pesky rice eating birds called “Maya.”
Farmers have devised imaginative methods of driving away birds which include hanging Betamax tapes pulled out of the cassettes and CDs in the ricefields.
When blown by the wind, the Betamax tapes flutter while the CDs create reflections which scare the birds.
Others use scarecrow while in my farm we use empty milk cans with pebbles inside to create noise.
These methods are very effective and the birds, considered by farmers as part of God’s creations, are not hurt in the process.
