I, Farm Boy! Failed Vaccination Case Result of Overcrowding

Recently, I had a frustrating experience of seeing some of my chicks in the brooder suffering from “sipon”, Coryza and paralysis even if they had been completely vaccinated.
I scratched my head and wondered aloud what went wrong with our vaccination program.
We actually start with parental vaccination and then apply B1B1, IBD and Gumboro twice, Fowl Pox, Mycoplasma, NCD Lasota and Coryza, all these applied before the chicks are 45 days old.
Perplexed, I asked a veterinarian friend to check the fowls in the brooder.
Dr. Jeff Salvatierra took some fowls from the brooder and dissected each one.
His conclusion was that our vaccination program failed or a “Failed Vaccination” in the vet jargon.
Dr. Salvatierra pointed to the overcrowding in our temporary brooders which he said resulted in ammonia build up.
The ammonia build up he said weakened the chicks’ resistance making them vulnerable to diseases.
We had to decongest and disinfect the brooders to correct the problem.
Another farm lesson learned, albeit expensive and frustrating.
But this is the nature of farming where lessons are learned the painful way.
