Raising backyard chicken in the free-range need not be expensive, that is if you are resourceful in looking for farm wastes and wild yams which could be used a feeds.
In my farm now, I have started feeding our 4-month-old cockerels confined in one yard with cooked Wild Yam or Gabi and rotten Langka which had been attacked by fruit borers.
The process is very simple.
The rotten Langka and Wild Yam (Gabi or Karlang, in the local dialect) are chopped and then placed in a cooking vat with water.
When the Yam or Jackfruit is soft enough, the farm workers take this out of the cooking vat for cooling after which rice or corn bran is mixed then it is fed to the chicken in the range.
The so love this recipe that they clean up the feeding troughs.
Now, this is a very important experiment that we are sharing with other farmers who are interested in raising backyard chicken because one of the challenges of chicken raising is the prohibitive cost of commercial feeds, including cracked corn.
With this system now, we will be able to reduce our cost of feeds to at least half and it will be a big savings.
This would make free-range chicken raising profitable for poor rural families.
