Our experiment on raising free-range chicken in the highlands of Mindanao is showing very positive results.
The second batch of 45-day-old chicks which were placed in a free-range area at over 1,200-meters above sea level appeared vigorous and healthy.
After 2 weeks in the aeea, the chicks have adopted.
The cool climate and the undulating dry land are seen as the main factors which contributed to their health and vigor.
There is no stagnant water and the chicks have access to a lot of green grass.
Of the over 1,000 which were transferred to the area from Kidapawan, only 15 died most of which were weak and runts.
Next week, another batch of about 1,500 will be brought to the area to be ranged.
I intend to raise about 10,000 Manok Pinoy chicks in the area by the end of January next year.
This experiment is significant because I am looking at Free-Range Chicken Farming as one of the income earning activities to be introduced to the tribal communities in the highlands of Mindanao.
