For several months, I and the boys in the farm were cracking our heads trying to find answers to the deteriorating egg hatching rate and high chick mortality starting on the 5th to the 7th day after hatching.
The physical manifeststions were drooping wings, wet feathers and the poop sticking in the vent.
We tried medical remedies but still the problem persisted.
That was when I called up some breeder-friends and almost all of them, including Negros Occidental gamefowl breeder Lancy dela Torre, said I should have my incubators checked.
True enough.
When the incubator experts checked, it was discovered that the humidity level of my incubators was very low resulting in longer hatching period and weak chicks.
Today, three weeks after the adjustments were made, we are hatching healthy chicks and the high mortality from the 5th to the 7th day had been addressed.
It was a simple problem which could have caused us tremendous losses had it not been detected and addressed.
The lesson here is that in farming where you deal with living plants and animals, a farmer must have keen eyes and quick action.
