Mindanao has a new champion crop which would not only provide poor farming families extra income but also boost alternative health remedies for people traumatized by the COVID 19 Pandemic.
Lemongrass, locally known as “Tanglad,” now has a ready market, a small firm in Butuan City which processes it to produce the pricey Lemongrass Oil with Hydrosol as a by-product.
Mindanao inventor Engr. Rudy Cane and his wife, Elizabeth, are buying fresh Lemongrass leaves for P6 per kilo.
For those with volume production, meaning at least 5 to 6 tons, the Canes will pick up the Lemongrass leaves anywhere in Mindanao.
A surge in the demand for two Lemongrass products that they sell – Lemongrass Oil in capsules and Hydrosol – prompted the couple to reach out to farmers around Mindanao for supplies.
Lemongrass Oil in capsules and daily intake of Hydrosol have actually relieved me from chronic rhinitis which I have suffered for so long.
Another prospective market which excites the couple is the free-range poultry and small ruminants industry.
In cooperation with my farm, the Canes and I are experimenting on the benefits of Hydrosol on chicken and goats.
We now give Hydrosol to a group of young chicken having respiratory problems like “sipon” and “halak.”
This was prompted by accounts made by Agusan del Sur Gov. Santiago Cane, Engr. Cane’s older brother, that he uses Hydrosol as drinking water additive for his free range chicken and never had to immunize or vaccinate.
Once the health benefits of Hydrosol on chicken and small ruminants are established, it could revolutionize free-range chicken and goat farming in Mindanao.
Another advantage of planting Lemongrass is the fact that it could ratoon, meaning the farmer does not have to replant as it will just regrow after harvest.
