My free-range chicken farm in Kidapawan City uses electric-powered incubators to hatch eggs.
This is mainly because we collect more than 400 eggs a day and we need to schedule the hatching of these eggs so that we could program our brooding system too.
The problem with incubators, however, is that since it is electronic, it could malfunction at any given time.
Also, given the unreliability of our power supply, brownouts could wreak havoc on farm operations.
So, if you ask me what would be the best option for a free-range chicken farmer?
Well, if you only have about 100 hens, it is best to allow them to sit on their eggs and do natural hatching.
Rattan baskets with old jute sacks as matting are your best nests.
Just make sure that the nests are set up well.
If you have problems with mites and lice, which is common in brooding hens, just gather Kakawate or Lemongrass leaves and lay these in the nests to keep the parasites away.
Attached to this article is a video I took of a prodigal hen which jumped out of the breeding yard and secretly laid and hatched her eggs in the bushes. When she came out, she had 14 healthy chicks in tow.
Indeed, nothing beats Mother Nature!
