Two months ago, I was dismayed to discover that many of the fruits of my young Abuyog Sweet Langka planted in my farm about 4 years ago were damaged by fruit borers.
Unprotected by a plastic wrap or through chemical spraying, the young fruits are vulnerable to the borers which prick the fruits leaving behind larvae which when hatched create holes in the fruits called “Tamasok” in our dialect.
I decided to take preventive measures by first spraying the trees and fruits with insecticide mixed with fungicide and foliar fertilizer.
Then, I bought polyethylene bags commonly used by banana farmers to wrap the fruits and keep the borers out.
Yesterday, I visited the Langka Orchard in my farm and I was delighted to see clean and unscathed young fruits.
I was able to save a lot of young fruits because I was able to check on the Langka and immediately instituted corrective measures to a problem.
