This is part of my personal advocacy to encourage rural families to raise at least a few heads for eggs and meat.
I was born during a period when almost every rural family had a few heads of chicken running around the farm.
Aside from the eggs which were just plucked out of the nests under the houses or in the barn, chickens were also the easily available source of protein for rural folks.
Those days are gone now and even rural families buy eggs produced by commercial layer farms and the chicken meat comes from old and culled layer hens.
It is my hope that by raising awareness on the benefits and profitability of having free-range chicken, families will once again embrace that old farming practice.
Raising backyard chicken could contribute to food security and reduce poverty in the countryside.
Tomorrow’s lesson will be on the selection of eggs for hatching.
