Late last year, I moved a herd of pure and graded Boers from my farm in Kidapawan City (Elev. 300-meters above sea level) to the highlands of Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon (elev.1,400-masl).
I wanted to experiment on the adaptability of meat goats in the cold highlands because I see goat raising as a good source of income for tribal families in the mountains of Mindanao.
Today, five months after 10 heads of pure and graded Boers were moved to Miarayon, I checked on the goats and I was delighted with what I saw.
The goats, including the kids, appeared robust and healthy.
There were only nine heads left because one doeling was attacked and killed by a neighbor’s dog.
Aside from that bad news, the experiment appeared to be a success.
Fed with fortified fermented silage as supplement to the grass and weeds, the goats adapted well to the cold climate and high elevation.
This development made me decide to move my other Boer goats from Kidapawan to the Talakag farm to expand the experiment.
Should the results turn positive, raising meat goats in the highlands of Mindanao would be another program that I will work on.
