I, Farm Boy! Raising Free-Range Chicken In Mindanao’s Cool Highlands

I have often been asked whether free-ranged chicken will survive in the cold climate of the highlands in Mindanao.
My stock answer is: Chicken, just like human beings and other animals, acclimatize.
This means that their bodies automatically adjust to the new environment and temperature.
But there is no better way of proving this than by actually doing it.
With the help of tribal farmer-leader Ryan Danio, I have opened a pilot farm in the highlands of Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon.
In an 8-hectare area which Ryan allowed me to use “for life,” I have established a ranging area for Manok Pinoy chicks.
I brought about 500 chicks at 45-days old from my farm in Kidapawan City with an elevation of about 300-meters above sea level to Miarayon almost a month ago.
Then, last week, another batch of 1,000 was transferred from Kidapawan to the ranging area with an elevation of 1,200-MASL.
The new ranging area is colder by about 10 degrees than Kidapawan City.
So far, the experiment is working well.
The chicks have adjusted and appeared very healthy except for about 30 mortalities, mostly the weak ones.
This experiment is very critical because of my advocacy to introduce free range chicken farming to the Indigenous People’s comnunities in the highlands of Mindanao.
Once proven successful, this could have a great impact on my dream of bringing down poverty among the IPs of Mindanao.
Just to clarify, this is my personal advocacy and no government funds were or will be used in this program.
