Two months after we made adjustments in our chicks rearing system, we released in the range today about 700 young cockerels which are about 2-months old.
Literally, it was Independence Day for the young Manok Pinoy as they were kept in brooders using rice hulls as litter for two months.
During the period, we observed a stringent health program which included vaccinations for common poultry diseases, including IBD, Gumburo, Fowl Pox NCD Lasota, Mycoplasma and Coryza.
Before this, we reared our chicks in the range right on Day One.
With the onset of the rainy seadon coupled by our problems with Crows which preyed on the little biddies, we decided to keep them in a circular brooder for 21 days and in broodings pens until they are 2 months old before setting them loose in the yard to enjoy the greens.
After a month in the range, they will go through a selection process.
Those which conform with my phenotypic standards retained for breeding whilr those which do not will be delivered to the meat market.
Observing the vigor of the young Manok Pinoy today, it looked like we did the right move in adjusting our rearing program.
