One of the foreseen problems in shifting our backyard chicken breeding from the free-range to pens would be red mites and lice.
Red mites or “tungaw” and mites or “kuto” and “dapaw” could adversely affect the health of chickens, especially laying hens.
When I was a young boy growing up in the farm, I learned a lot of practical lessons from my grandfather, Jose.
To drive away “dapaw” from the brooding hens’ nests, he would place “Kakawate” leaves.
Today, I am making my own innovation by laying lemon grass leaves in the breeding pens where we use rice hulls as beddings.
I will also try Citronella leaves, “Kakawate,” and a shrub growing in the uplands of Talakag, Bukidnon called”Ginong” which the native Talaandigs use in driving away insects.
Do your own experiments in your farms and let us learn from each other’.
