Farmers are always resistant to change, including the adoption of new technologies.
They could be stubborn and hardheaded unless they see how the new technology would directly benefit them.
I am a farmer and I belong to that group of people who would not adopt anything new unless it is proven.
This was precisely the reason why, when I was Secretary of Agriculture, I discouraged live-in seminars for farmers.
Instead, I directed the Agricultural Training Institute to go back to the fields for season-long farm schools.
This was what I had in mind when I started the Upland Hybrid Rice Demo using pressurized irrigation in my farm last May.
Today, as word of the progress of the Pilot Farm had spread, the farmers themselves have started coming to see for themselves the new technology.
This makes me remember what the voice told Kevin Costner in the movie “Field of Dreams” – “Build it, They will come!”
I built it and now they start to come.
This is a moment of fulfillment for me.
