There are so many farm wastes which could be turned into useful materials by simply using a little imagination.
Chicken dung produced by my breeders in the breeding pens and chicks in the brooders is one example.
Our chick brooders have receptacles layered with Carbonized Rice Hull which is now mixed with Coco Peat, widely available in the Philippines, for fruit seedling polybags.
The shift from soil to Coco Peat and Carbonized Rice Hull in propagating seedlings in polybags will allow us to ship seedlings of fruit trees to areas outside of Mindanao.
The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has banned the shipment of seedlings in polybags with soil outside of Mindanao because of the presence of Fusarium Wilt virus in some banana production areas.
Fusarium Wilt or Panama Disease is a soil-borne virus which destroys Bananas, especially the Cavendish Variety.
Earlier this week, I decided to change the beddings in my breeding pens from rice hulls to a mix of Coco Peat and Carbonized Rice Hull.
My plan is to produce Organic Fertilizer from the beddings of the breeding pens.
After two months, we could “harvest” the Coco Peat and Carbonized Rice Hull beddings and feed these to African night crawlers in vermi-composting boxes.
This process will produce the Vermicast, an organic fertilizer which could be used for our fruit trees or vegetable production.
