What started as just my personal experiment on Upland Rice Farming using Israeli Fertigation Technology has now gained national interest and attention.
The Pilot Area for Upland Rice Farming using modern Hybrid Seeds and employing Pressurized Fertigation is a mere 500-sqm. portion of my farm in Kidapawan City.
It started as an actual application of the lessons I learned as one of the students of an on-line course on Pressurized Irrigation in the Tropical Regions conducted by Mashav of Israel.
I wanted to prove that with Pressurized Irrigation, a farmer in upland areas unserved by the traditional gravity irrigation, could actually double his yield and harvest twice a year.
When former PhilRice Executive Director Dr. Sailila Abdulla learned of my project, he and other PhilRice officials offered to provide technical support.
The seed company, Seedworks Phils, whose TH 82 Hybrid was used in the demo, also volunteered to support the project.
Finally, the Mindanao Development Authority formed a team to document the pilot farm production date.
Today, at Day 40, the rice growth is impressive and the needed protecton was also provided.
In 70 more days, it would be established if Hybrid Rice Farming using Fertigation Technology could address poverty and ensure Food Security in the poor upland areas of Mindanao.
