One of the most critical aspects of free-range chicken raising is deworming, the process of expelling intestinal worms like tapeworms and roundworms.
The presence of these parasites in the free-range chicken could result in the following problems:
1. Low egg productivity for laying hens;
2. Vulnerability to diseases like “sipon” and “halak” which if unchecked could kill the chicken;
3. Stunted growth, especially for the young growing chicks.
For free-range chicken it is advisable to deworm them at least every 45 days but it is better to do it every 30 days.
The only problem with regular deworming is the labor and expense it entails.
Of course, there are ways of introducing dewormers, including mixing it with the drinking water if you are using a commercial dewormer.
The other would be introducing deworming tablets to each chicken , especially for gamefowls.
This is, however, very expensive.
One deworming tablet now sells between P7 to P8 each which means that if you have 1,000 chicken you will have to spend P7,000 every 45 days.
To save on this expense and to keep up with our goal of producing naturally grown and healthy free-range meat chicken, Manok Pinoy, we regularly use Betel Nut as dewormer.
The young nut is divided into four parts and orally introduced individually.
Ma-trabaho especially since we have about 10,000 free range chicken in the farm now.
For the biddies, however, we still use the commercial water soluble dewormer.
Betel Nut deworming is very effective and inexpensive.
Right now, we are getting our Betel Nut supply from an old farmer in Magpet town, near my farm, who planted rows of Betel Nuts to serve as his peripheral markers for his farm.
We have also planted Betel Nuts in the farm to sustain our operations in the future. It would take about 3 to 4 years befote it will bear fruits but it is worth the wait.
Subukan nyo. Napaka effective at wala ka pang gastos.
