Yesterday, before going home to Kidapawan from Talakag, Bukidnon, I bought two huge sacks of Cabbage from farmer-leader Ryan Danio.
The Cabbage was set for delivery to a vegetable consolidation area in Cagayan de Oro City controlled by traders who also finance some of the farmers.
At P10 per kilo, I paid P1,000 per sack, P100 higher than its actual buying price delivered to Cagayan De Oro because each sack weighed only about 90 kilos.
Then, farmer Ryan gave me a tip: Kung bibili ka ng gulay sa palengke, don’t choose the shiny and the unblemished because more often than not those were bombarded with so much chemical spray to keep the worms away.
He said Cabbage with outer covering flaps punctured by worms is the better choice because it means that the farmer did not spray his field with chemicals.
In exchange for the helpful information he shared with me, I gave him an idea of what else we could do with the vegetable wastes they just throw away in Miarayon.
I proposed three projects:
1. Dairy Goat Farming using waste vegetables including Carrots as natural feeds;
2. Rabbit Growing for meat and pets feeding them with Carrot rejects and other vegetables;
3. Vermicast Fertilizer production using farm wastes and the expected goat manure which they could use to fertilize their vegetable farms.
This is the beauty of being out in the field with the farmers and seeing actual situations on the ground.
Many practical ideas surface which could help improve the lives of our people.
