From P2 per kilo last week, the buying price for Chinese Cabbage from Bukidnon vegetable farmers jumped to as high as P15 to P16 this weekend as the 3-Day MinDA Tienda held in Kidapawan City opened a new and huge market.
Farmer leaders from Bukidnon who visited Kidapawan City yesterday to join the MinDA Tienda sa Kidapawan which offered fresh vegetables from the IMTASULA Region of Bukidnon said that traders from Cagayan De Oro suddenly increased their buying price from P2 to P15 per kilo.
This was right after they saw posts on this page showing that there is a market for Bukidnon vegetables which offers better prices in North Cotabato and other Central Mindanao provinces.
“Kalit lang nisaka ang ilang pagpamalit sa among gulay,” farmer leader Champ Luna of Lantapan town said. (The buying price suddenly went up.)
Last week, disappointed farmers from Talakag and Lantapan towns refused to harvest their vegetables as traders in Bulwa, Cagayan De Oro City offered only P2 per kilo for Chinese Cabbage.
“Kulang pa sa karton ug labor ang presyo,” said farmer leader Ryan Danio. (It is not even enough to cover the cost of carton boxes and labor.)
To assist the farmers, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) hastily arranged a MinDA Tienda offering Chinese Cabbage, Carrots, Potatoes in Kidapawan City.
The effect on the farm gate prices were immediate much to the delight of the farmers.
This is a clear proof that prices of farmers produce are oftentimes manipulated by traders who know that the poor farmers do not have direct access to the market.
Not anymore because MinDA Tienda has opened the doors to a new and big market.
