Yesterday, I had to hold a hoe again just like I did as a young farm boy, to lead my farm workers in saving about 3,000 square meters of neglected young Soybeans in a borrowed land in Barangay New Esperanza, Mlang, Cotabato.
The portion of the area planted to Soybeans is located beside the river and a bit isolated which explains why it was neglected.
The Soybeans were planted in 8.3-hectares of a 30-hectare property owned by the North Cotabato Palm Oil Corp., a company headed by my brother, Pat.
When I made rounds of the Soybeans plots last Saturday, I discovered the neglected portion near the river where the weeds had overwhelmed the young Soybeans.
Rather than be angry at the people I assigned to supervise the farm, I decided to buy hoes and gloves and joined the workers in clearing the area.
Before sunset yesterday, a Sunday, the whole area was cleared of weeds.
Early last night it rained and so today, we will apply Chicken Dung Slurry fortified with Inorganic fertilizer on the young Soybeans.
Yesterday, I also made a resolve that I will have to personally oversee my Sorghum and Soybeans projects.
Nobody understands the value of a healthy Sorghum and Soybeans than the farmer himself.
