There is so much sloganeering on bringing back the youth to agriculture but there is hardly any suggestion on how to do it.
Last year, I learned that the son of one of my workers, who virtually grew up in the farm, took up Criminology as a College Course in a school in Kidapawan City.
When I asked the parents why they chose that course, sabi nila yon lang daw ang kaya nila.
I offered them a proposition: I will sponsor the college education of their son provided he takes up Veterinary Medicine.
In addition to that, I have assured him of employment as farm veterinarian when he graduates.
Today, Jimjim Camillo is about to finish the first year of his VetMed course at the University of Southern Mindanao, one of the best agricultural state universities in the Southern Philippines.
On weekends and holidays, he works in the farm to earn his weekly allowance.
His actual experience in raising the Manok Pinoy I believe will give him an edge over his classmates.
After all, schools give you the diploma but the farm gives you the experience.
By the way, my son, Bernhart Immanuel, is also taking up Veterinary Medicine and he needs no convincing because he loves chicken.
Also, he knows that when I am gone, he will take over the farm and the breeding and raising of Manok Pinoy.
Let’s walk the talk!
