Manok Pinoy by Braveheart Farms & Nursery December 31, 2019 · Iconic Manok Pinoy

When I started breeding a new strain of free-ranged chicken 10 years ago, I only wanted to pursue a personal taste preference for chicken – succulent meat with firm and long muscle strands.
I also wanted to breed a strain which could adapt to local climatic and environmental conditions and thrive on whatever feeds would be available.
Having achieved that many years ago, I am now focusing on a distinctive appearance for my chicken.
Manok Pinoy, in my breeder’s vision, should be dark-legged, dark red or black grey to black plummage and rosecombed.
The iconic Manok Pinoy, just like the ones in this enhanced photo, is slowly becoming a reality.
At least 80% of what comes out of my breeding program conforms with the standards I have set for Manok Pinoy.
In a couple of years, with the simple but tedious process of phenotypic trait purification, the ideal Manok Pinoy would be perfected.
By then, I could perhaps write another lengthy chronicle of how a farm boy, using basic farm experiments and practical genetics, was able to develop a distinct chicken breed adaptable to local climatic and environmental conditions.
This chicken breed, Manok Pinoy, given its consistent traits and taste and improved egg-laying, could lift many farming families in the countryside out of poverty.
