With a weekly production of almost 1,000 chicks, the population of Manok PiNoy breeders in the Braveheart Farms is growing steadily and is expected to reach the 5,000 hen level by 2015.
Out of the weekly chick production, about 200-300 pullets are retained and are segregated and reared in separate rearing pens to prepare them for egg laying.
Cockerels are also selected according to their body structure to ensure that the Manok PiNoy chicks which will be produced in the future will conform with the standards of the naturally-grown and grass and corn-fed backyard chicken for the Filipino families’ tables.
Those which are not selected for breeding are now being marketed and delivered to specialty restaurants in Davao City.
Hopefully by next year, the Braveheart Farms will realize its target of producing at least 20,000 heads monthly for the meat market.
This video shows pullets and cockerels already selected for future breeding being let loose from their enclosed roosting place early in the morning.
