Propagating and selling seedlings of High Value Fruit trees like the Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit and Hass Avocado is something that I should have done a year ago.
I did not foresee the dawning of the planting craze following the restrictions on movements of people because of the COVID 19 Lockdowns.
This year, I am trying to catch up with the “plantito” craze by propagating a huge number of seedlings of the EVIARC-developed Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit variety and the Hass Avocado which is in demand especially in the highland areas of Mindanao.
I have started with an initial 30,000 rootstocks of the local Jackfruit variety which will be grafted with the scions from the Abuyog Sweet planted four years ago out of the seedlings I bought in Leyte.
We are targeting to produce 100,000 grafted seedlings before the end of the year to satisfy the huge demand for Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit seedlings.
Our advantage is that we have a limitless supply of scions since I have hundreds of mature Abuyog Sweet trees.
For Hass Avocado, we are targeting a modest 10,000 grafted seedlings owing mainly to the limited supply of scions of Hass Avocado.
The grafting materials which we will use come from five mother trees planted by Dole Philippines in the highlands of Bukidnon which were made available to us.
As soon as the seedlings mature, Braveheart Farms which I own will be sharing these with other farmers at the prevailing market prices.
Aside from the fact that we will be generating income from this project, I believe that by propagating these high value fruit tree seedlings, we will be contributing to the advocacy to encourage people to plant trees in the deforested and denuded highlands of Mindanao.
