A colony of 2,000 snails or Golden Kuhol in a tub fed with Malunggay leaves could produce every 3 days 250 gallons of nitrates needed by plants for vigorous growth.
In this second part of the 4-part lecture series of Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French, he explains that snails are the most prolific producer of nitrates, a natural option to the very expensive commercial Urea.
“My love affair with snails started in 1986,” said French who since then kept a colony of snails in his farm in Coachella Valley, Southern California.
To produce 250 gallons of raw nitrates, French said a farmer needs the following:
1. A tub made out of plywood with a plastic liner which could hold 250 gallons of water;
2. At least 200 lbs. (roughly 90 kilos) of Golden Kuhol which he suggests should be produced by hatching small eggs to ensure that they do not carry parasites;
3. Substantial supply of Malunggay leaves to be fed to the snails ad libitum.
4. Small water pump to drain the nitrates-filled water every 3 days to be transferred to a curing tank.
After draining the nitrates from the tub, 250 gallons of freshwater could be poured in again.
Rocky said Malunggay leaves are the preferred feed over Ipil-Ipil leaves because of the higher protein content at 34% and the high calcium content which the snails need to develop stronger shells.
Tomorrow, in our 3rd part of the Rocky French Lecture Series, he will provide very simple instructions on how to convert the raw nitrates into effective replacement for the commercial Urea.
