Show Them How! KIDS ARE FAST LEARNERS

Last week, I.made a video presentation on how to make seedling bags out of banana leaves which I said are better than plastic polybags.

I did not notice that the 12-year-old daughter of my househelp who prepares my food in the farm, a Maguindanaon Muslim, was watching and listening intently.

This morning, I was surprised to see her making seedling bags out of banana leaves all by herself.

Ayma Bala, one of the four children of a young Muslim farmer who sought refuge in my farm along with his family after he was attacked and mutilated by a group of Christian militias in 2008, grew up in the farm along with her siblings.

She and her siblings call me “Tua” or grandfather and proudly tell their relatives when they visit their hometown, Carmen, that Manny Piñol is their grandfather.

Of course, that sounds unbelievable to many Muslims in Mindanao who do not know me personally and branded me anti-Muslim.

It’s a long story and I will share it in the future.

But back to the young Muslim girl, Ayma. She is a perfect example that kids learn fast and they identify with people they idolize.

So you want children to get involved in Agriculture?

Well, you have to set the example and of course show them that you know what you are doing.
