The Mindanao Development Authority’s Mindanao Livestock Industry Development Program took a big leap forward yesterday with the opening of a 2,400-sow level hog breeder farm and a feed milling facility in Polomolok, South Cotabato with an initial investment estimated at $100-M.
The twin projects, fruits of over a year-long MinDA-injitiated engagement between Thailand’s biggest agro-industrial conglomerate, Charoen Phokphand Food Philippines, and a General Santos City-based companies, Nutri Hogs Corp. and Gensan Milling, mark the beginning of a massive livestock and poultry industry development in Mindanao.
These facilities are also expected to support MinDA’s Corn and Sorghum Development Programs which would benefit farmers in the region.
CPF Philippines Executive Vice President Sakol Cheewakoset said the company expects the total Mindanao investments to reach $1-B over the next five years.
He said he will link up their investment program with the initiatives of MinDA in boosting Corn and Sorghum Production with the establishment of Corn Grains Silo Storage in major corn producing provinces of the country.
“We will expand to more areas and we hope MinDA will guide us,” Sakol told me during our one-on-one engagement yesterday.
I had engaged with CPF Philippines officials when I was Secretary of Agriculture when I helped arrange a call of CP Foods owner Dhanin Cheevaranont on President Rody Duterte during his State Visit to Thailand in March 2017.
Following my transfer to the Mindanao Development Authority in August 2019, CP Foods Philippines officials travelled to Davao City to explore the area for their hog and poultry operations expansion.
CPF Philippines’ partnership with the couple Nathaniel and Marivet Caballero who own both Nutri Hogs, Gensan Milling and Ren & Rel Fishing Corporation was initiated by MinDA over a year ago.
Yesterday’s activity was a remarkable event as this could start the development of Mindanao’s poultry and hog production potentials and turn the region into the main source of these commodities for the country and the region.
