All 20,000 Giant Bamboo Propagules which we shipped to the Bamboo Valley Corp. Nursery in Cabagan, Isabela survived the rigorous 6-day 2,032-kilometer journey from Kidapawan City.
The cargo truck, owned by a friend and townmate, Roberto Alba Jr., left Kidapawan on Friday and arrived in Cabagan, Isabela early today.
Engr. Edgar Pagulayan and Vic Calderon, my friends who were convinced to venture into the Giant Bamboo Industry because of my advocacy in Mindanao, set up the modern nursery with pressurized irrigation 5 months ago.
They have organized the Bamboo Valley Corp. which aims to establish a bamboo processing plant in Isabela to start Luzon’s bamboo industry.
Just like the model in Mindanao, the Bukidnon Giant Bamboo Resources Corp., the planned Cagayan Valley Bamboo Processing Facility will produce treated bamboo slats, laminated bamboo boards and housing materials.
The shipment today is considered the biggest volume of Giant Bamboo planting materials brought to Luzon from Mindanao.
Earlier, we also shipped 20,000 propagules which were just packed but the mortality was over 50%.
The successful shipment today could boost the growth of the Bamboo Industry in Cagayan Valley which in turn is expected to mitigate flooding and lower the heat index.
In October 2016, when I was the Agriculture Secretary, I visited the flooded Cagayan Valley and recommended the planting of trees and bamboos.
Today, even after I have resigned from DA, I am fufilling my promise to help the farmers of the vast valley.
