One of the country’s top agriculture firm which supplies seeds and farm equipment, including greenhouses and drip irrigation, has adopted an old farming technique of using banana leaves as seed propagation bags.
Harbest Agribusiness Corporation President Arsenio “Toto” Barcelona, said his company will adopt the technology taught by my grandmother, Azucena Magbanua, which I shared in a Facebook post yesterday.
“Brilliant idea ang banana leaf seedling bag. We will include that technique in our training (program for farmers),” Toto said in a text message sent to me today.
Harbest is one of the leading agricultural machinery and equipment suppliers offering the most modern technology like drone spraying.
Toto Barcelona, however, said that my grandmother’s Green Seedbags technology using banana leaves is so practical and environment-friendly that it will be introduced to farmers trained in vegetable farming.
To honor the old woman whose farming wisdom is still relevant until today, my Lola Azun, Toto Barcelona said he will name this farming technology as the Azucena Green Seedbags.
By using the Azucena Green Seedbags technology, farmers will no longer have to buy plastic polybags to germinate seeds, avoid seedlings stress in transplanting because the whole bag could be placed in the hole along with the seedlings and protect the environment.
I could only smile in disbelief realizing that the things old farmers did in the past, like using Betel Nuts as chicken dewormers, would still prove to be far superior that modern technology.
My grandmother, Lola Azun, and my grandfather, Lolo Jose, who helped her in preparing the Banana Green Seedbags to grow tobacco seeds could be smiling in heaven now.
Salamat Lola kag Lolo sa mga praktikal nga leksyon sa panguma.
