“Balik” Livelihood Prospects! ZAMBO NORTE SHORES TEEM WITH BANGUS FRY

Irasan, Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte – I woke up very early today after spending the night in a beach front property of the Bernad Family in this town to a beautiful sight of fishermen catching Bangus fry.
Bangus fry is produced by large Mother Milkfish called Sabalo and it is as thin as a nylon fiber.
Once caught, it is sold by the thousands to a Bangus nursery which will nurture it until it grows to the size of a finger, hence the name Fingerlings.
The supply of Bangus fingerlings is one of the major problems of the country’s milkfish industry.
When I was Secretary of Agriculture, I ordered the repair and rehabilitation of all government owned hatcheries in the country.
The program increased Bangus fingerlings production but it is not still enough to fill up the needs of the industry.
Until today, the industry is still dependent on Bangus fingerlings imported from Indonesia or Taiwan.
The sight in Irasan, Zamboanga del Norte today of fishermen using the traditional “Sudsud” to sweep the tiny fry from the shores gave me the idea that Bangus Fish Cage Farming could be one of the livelihood options under the Balik Probinsya Program pushed by Senator Christopher Lawrence Go.
Balik Probinsya beneficiaries could be organized into clusters and introduced to fish cage farming which is very profitable.
Also, the activity could contribute to the country’s economic recovery and the food sufficiency program.
