Over a year after its grand launching, the Balik Probinsya Bagong Pag-asa Program Model Village in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte, is slowly but surely taking place, thanks to the institutional foundations for the project established from the very beginning.
The Kauswagan BP2 Project, known as the Kauswagan Organic Village, is the first of the two projects initiated by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) right after the launching of the program at the height of the COVID 19 Pandemic.
The other project is the BP2 Agricultural Community in Kalawit, Zamboanga del Norte where the construction of the housing units is also on-going.
As planned by MinDA, the Kauswagan Organic Village and the Kalawait Agricultural Community will both accomodate 200 families each coming home from the urban centers as part of the Duterte Administration’s Program to provide a better life and opportunities for the informal urban settlers.
It was the National Housing Authority (NHA) through General Manager Marcelino Escalada, who responded to directives from President Rodrigo Duterte and Sen. Christopher Lawrence Go, who provided the funds for the establishment of the model villages.
In Lanao del Norte, Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo and Kauswagan Mayor Rommel Arnado spearheaded the project while in Zamboanga del Norte, it was Gov. Alberto Uy and Kalawit Mayor Salvador Antojado who led the project.
On Thursday, I dropped by in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte on the way home to Cotabato from Iloilo to check on the BP2 Organic Village and I was pleased to see that work is in progress.
The pace is not as fast as I expected it because some of the agencies who were initially enthusiastic in participating seem to have lost focus.
But thanks to the Project Management Office which MinDA established right at the start, the BP2 Organic Village is surely progressing.
On Wednesday, I will also check the progress of the Kalawit Agricultural Community to ensure that the project which many poor urban families pin their hopes on for a better life is being pursued.
