President Rody Duterte yesterday signed an Executive Order officially creating the “Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa” Commission which will handle the rural resettlement program as proposed by Senator Christopher Lawrence Go.
The EO is the first step in institutionalizing the government’s program to decongest the urban centers of informal dwellers from the provinces and create jobs, food production and economic activities in the countryside.
Named Chairman of the Commission was Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea while Acting National Economic Development Authority Director General Karl Chua was designated as vice chairman.
National Housing Authority (NHA) General Manager Marcelino Escalada, Jr. heads the Secretariat which will basically undertake the yeoman’s task of implementing the massive resettlement program which is expected to clear urban centers of squatter colonies.
Even working families who would like to go home to their provinces are also expected to join the reverse migration as the BPBPP is expected to create jobs and income opportunities in the rural areas.
Twenty other departments and agencies of government, including the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) are members of the Council.
Sen. Go is expected to introduce a legislation in the Senate which would craft a law which would institutionalize the Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa Program.
