After a 7-hour land trip from Davao, the caravan of vehicles and trucks with farmers and products from Mindanao converged at the Port of Lipata, Surigao City to cross Surigao Straits today for a two-day journey to Manila.
Fruits, food items, handicrafts, marine products and even rootcrops will be displayed for three days at the Kartilya ng Katipunan Plaza beside the Manila City hall from Oct. 23 to 25 for the MinDA Tienda sa Manila, a program of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the Ciy Government of Manila through the help of Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso.
More than just selling the products that they brought with them, farmers and fishermen’s groups aim to establish a direct link with institutional buyers to get a better price for their produce.
Paricipants in the program were instructed to prepare their business cards, including farmers and fishermen, to emphasize the importance of business linkages in accessing the market and getting a good price for their produce.
Even before the MinDA Tienda sa Manila could start, the City Government has already ordered 600-metric tons of Mindanao’s famous Organic Black Rice.
The MinDA Tienda advocacy is part of MinDA’s program of institutionalizing the concept of “Complete Value Chain” where farmers, fishermen and oher agriculture stakeholders increase the value of their produce by taking control of the whole process, from production, processing to marketing.
