Mindanao’s Organic Rice Farmers have offered four Metro Manila Mayors a unique Christmas gift for their Senior Citizens this Christmas – Black Rice in 5-kilo packs which is nutritious and low glycemic.
The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has forwarded the farmers’ proposals to the Mayors of Makati City, Abigail Binay; Taguig City, Lino Cayetano; Quezon City, Joy Belmonte; and Manila, Isko Moreno Domagoso through an official letter sent out last month.
Don Bosco Multi-Purpose Cooperative marketing manager, Betsy Ruizo Gamela, said the members of the cooperative all over Mindanao are hoping for a repeat of the program initiated by Mayor Isko Moreno last year where the City Government bought an estimated P60-M worth of Organic Rice which was distributed to the Senior Citizens of Manila.
“It was our biggest sales thus far and our members were very inspired by the support,” Gamela said.
This year, the farmers’ stocks could serve other cities aside from Manila which prompted the cooperative to offer the same program to the Cities of Makati, Taguig and Quezon.
“If the City Governments would buy the farmers’ Organic Black Rice, this would be a big help to them during these times of economic crisis,” Gamela said.
So far, the City of Manila had already responded to the offer of the Mindanao Organic Rice farmers with a top ranking official saying that Mayor Isko Moreno would like a repeat of last year’s project which was well-liked by the senior citizens.
“The City of Manila would also like to help, in whatever way we could, ease the economic difficulties of Mindanao’s Organic Black Rice farmers,” the official said.
