Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon – The best Carrots, Cabbage and Chinese Cabbage seeds and outstanding farmers in Mindanao will be known Dec. 10 to 12 during the culmination of the first ever Mindanao Vegetable Derby.
A project of the Mindanao Development Authority, Provincial Government of Bukidnon and towns of Impasugong, Talakag, Sumilao and Lantapan, the vegetable derby aims to introduce modern vegetable farming technology and best seeds to the farmers.
The Department of Agriculture Regional Office X is also supporting the project with the establishment of a P14-M Cold Storage Facility for vegetables in Talakag.
At least 12 Seeds Companies and Organic Farming System Groups participated in the Vegetable Derby.
Only three vegetable varieties were included in the derby – Carrots, Cabbage and Chinese Cabbage – as these are the most widely grown in the vegetable production area of Bukidnon called the IMTASULA Complex.
The Complex has an estimated area of 50,000 hectares with an elevation ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level.
MinDA eyes the development of the area for vegetables and high value crops.
Bukidnon Gov. Jose Ma. Zubiri has expressed full support for the project saying it could develop the province as a major vegetable production area in the country and the ASEAN Region.
During the awards ceremonies, Seeds Companies which produced quality vegetables will be given recognition and endorsement.
Their farmer-partners will be honored with trophies and prizes and declared “King” of Carrots, Cabbage or Chinese Cabbage.
