An Igorot woman-farmer, one of the hundreds of Cordillerans who migrated to Mindanao, was crowned yesterday as the 2020 Cabbage Queen in the season-long Mindanao Vegetable Derby.
The first-ever Mindanao Vegetable Derby is an initiative of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) to improve productivity, address poverty and rev up the region’s economic recovery.
Beatriz Homonlay, from Sumilao, Bukidnon, bested all other farmers, mostly men, producing the best quality Cabbage in the derby which started as early as July.
Homonlay partnered with East-West Seeds using the seeds and the farming technology of the company with the assistance of farm technicians.
She was awarded a trophy, a certificate and a 15 cu.ft. refrigerator from Sanden Cold Chain Systems Phils. President Usamo Ikeda.
Homonlay is one of the many Igorot farmers who settled in the highlands of Bukidnon and engaged in vegetable farming.
Many other Cordilleran families are scattered all over Mindanao, including Kabacan, Cotabato.
All of them are engaged in a work they know best – farming.
Known as quiet and industrious, most of the Igorot families are successful farmers.
