The first-ever Solar-Powered Irrigation and Potable Water Systems funded by a local government unit in Mindanao will soon serve the residents and farmers of Taraka, Lanao del Sur.
Supported by a loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines, the six SPIS units are expected to irrigate at least 600-hectares of fertile land in the Basak Region of the province.
The SPIS units are expected to be completed this summer, in time for the dry season planting.
The Solar-Powered Potable Water Supply System, on the other hand, will serve the 25,000 population of the town which had for ages sourced their water from Taraka River which meanders through the town proper disgorging into Lake Lanao.
Equipped with a filtration system, it is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Taraka is the first Mindanao LGU to enrol with the Mindanao Water Supply Program of the Mindanao Development Authority.
MinDA packaged the whole project which included the acquisition of road building equipment and tapped its financing partner, DBP to fund the projects.
Taraka Mayor Nashiba Sumagayan, a former MSU professor, said the projects when completed could totally change the town.
Taraka has been chosen by MinDA as its model town in its Rural Development Program which adheres to the policy of LGU Self-Reliance.
