Sorghum experts from two seed production companies from Texas, USA will travel to the Philippines in February next year to conduct a Mindanao-wide lecture series on Sorghum Propagation and Farm Management.
The lecture series, initiated by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), will involve experts from Scott Seed Company and Warner Seeds of Texas who will teach Mindanao and Palawan farmers on how to plant, manage, harvest and process Sorghum for food and animal feeds.
Local animal silage production experts will also join the lecture series to teach farmers on how to process Sorghum stalks for animal feeds.
Livestock experts will complement the silage production lecture by teaching farmers on how to fatten their cattle and goats using the Sorghum silage.
Mushroom culture and production experts will also be included in the list of lecturers to teach Sorghum farmers wives on how to culture edible mushrooms using Sorghum.
The lecture series will start third week of February in Davao del Norte in time for the launching of the MinDA Sorghum Development Program.
Feed mill companies will be invited during the launching to forge Sorghum Supply Contracts with farmers’ groups.
Already, one big hog and poultry corporation, CP Foods Philippines, a Thai multi-national agriculture and fisheries company, has pledged to buy farmers’ Sorghum production.
The program will be launched using an initial 25 metric tons of Sorghum seeds recently donated by Scott Seed Company to MinDA.
MinDA launches the Sorghum Development Program as part of its program to sustain Peace, increase Productivity and address rural poverty in Mindanao.
