Farming Brotherhood! MinDA Forms ‘Salam’ Team To Develop Taraka Ricefields

Over simple dinner in my farmhouse yesterday, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) formed a team of highly-skilled rice farmers from Cotabato who will assist the farmers of Taraka, Lanao del Sur.

The volunteers, mostly Christian farmers who will receive modest allowances, will stay for one whole season in Taraka and share modern farming technology with local farmers.

Together, they will develop a 200-hectare area served by the newly completed Solar Powered Irrigation System built by the local government of Taraka.

The program, Salam Brotherhood Farming, also aims to foster stronger ties between Muslims and Christians in Mindanao whose relationships were strained by conflicts which lasted for 50 years.
