Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon – Two years before the South Korea Sweet Strawberries which are now being propagated in the highlands of Bukidnon are expected to be produced in commercial volume, a plan on how to bring the berries to the market fresh is already being crafted.
Shortly after a visit to the fishing grounds of Nasipit, Agusan del Norte on Friday, the team of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and Sanden Philippines travelled to Talakag, Bukidnon to lay out a Cold Chain and Storage Plan for Mindanao’s high value products.
Sanden Cold Chain Systems Philippines, led by its President, Osamu Ikeda, Chief Operating Officer Larry Cruz and Field Officer Almar Maruggay made an on-site assessment on the post-harvest requirements for the high-value products coming out of the 50,000-hectare IMTASULA Complex of Bukidnon.
IMTASULA stands for Impasugong, Talakag Sumilao and Lantapan, the four highland towns of Bukidnon producing vegetables and high value crops.
While the Department of Agriculture has already allocated P14-million for a cold storage facility in Miarayon, Talakag, there is a need for an integrated Cold Chain System given the potentials of the area.
The Sanden Phils. President, Ikeda, was deeply impressed by the vast potentials of the area and projected that it could be a major source of vegetables and high value crops in the ASEAN Region.
He, however, emphasized that the key to the success of the MinDA initiative is a well-planned Cold Chain System and Logistics Strategy.
Just as with the Mindanao Fisheries and Aquaculture Program, Sanden Phils. offered to draw the Cold Chain System based on the actual requirements of the area.
Similar plans will also be crafted for the highlands of other Mindanao Provinces like Lanao del Sur, Misamis Oriental, Agusan del Norte, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao.
The key to the development of these areas for high value crops production is forward planning.
