Six upland areas of North Cotabato where most of Central Mindanao’s headwaters are found have been identified as the pilot area for the Bamboo Farming Program initiated by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).
The towns of Arakan, Antipas, President Roxas, Magpet and Makilala and the Capital City of Kidapawan will be the first Bamboo Industry Development Cluster to be established outside of the pioneering Bukidnon Province.
These towns are located in the upstream of the Cotabato River Basin whose excess water flows out through the Rio Grande de Mindanao in Cotabato City.
Other Bamboo Industry Development Clusters will established in seven remaining River Basins and the three Zamboanga Provinces.
Bamboo farmers in the different clusters will be organized and assisted in accessing loans from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) through their associations or the companies which will establish processing facilities.
The Bamboo Industry Development Program is one of the projects under the Green Mindanao Project launched by MinDA in 2019.
It aims to create an economic activity while at the same time re-green denuded highlands, protect watersheds while preventing soil erosion and flooding.
