Halal Beef Program! MInDA Eyes Bangsamoro Region For Mindanao Cattle Production

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, composed of five provinces, will soon become the country’s top beef producer as the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has identified the region as the priority area for the implementation of the Cattle Industry Development Program.
A MinDA Technical Working Group which includes officials of the BARMM Agriculture Ministry and the Bangsamoro Development Authority (BDA) will craft this week a comprehensive road map for the Bangsamoro Halal Beef Production Program which is expected to turn the former conflict area into a source of high-value beef for local consumption and export to the BIMP-EAGA countries.
The organization of the Technical Working Group followed a Field Tour and Orientation in a Cattle Fattening Facility in Polomolok, South Cotabato conducted by MinDA for officials of the BDA and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) of the BARMM on Saturday.
The comprehensive Road Map for Bangsamoro Halal Beef Production will be presented to BARMM Chief Minister Ahod “Murad” Ebrahim and MAFAR officials led by Minister Mohammad Yacob second week of April.
The Bangsamoro Halal Beef Production Road Map will propose the establishment of Cattle Breeding and Fattening Facilities in the five provinces of the BARMM, including the construction of Halal Abattoirs and processing facilities.
Initially, the program will start with just one Cattle Fattening Facility in a property owned by the BDA inside the main camp of the Moro Islamic LIberation Front (MILF) in Darapanan, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.
The Fattening Facility will be complemented by the Double AA Halal Abattoir established by the Department of Agriculture in Cotabato City.
Later, other Cattle Fattening facilities, utilizing local cattle and imported culled cows and steers from Australia, will also be set up in the Provinces of Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawitawi.
The Cattle Fattening Program will be supported by a region-wide community cattle breeding program which would involve an Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer Program to upgrade local cattle.
The importation of Heifers to increase the number of breederes will also be recommended which would expand the Cattle Breeding Program to all communities within the Bangsamoro Region.
During the initial discussions between MinDA, the BDA and MAFAR, it was agreed that what would come out of the BARMM would be Halal Beef ready for the market.
Other allied industries were also identified like Silage-Making, Meat Processing and Leather-Making which would create employment and income generating oppotunities for residents of the region.
The TWG will work through the Holy Week to finish the proposed Road Map to fasttrack the program to be able to catch up with the celebration of the animal sacrifice, Qurban, when about 1,000 heads cattle would be needed by the Muslim leaders.
