Chicken egg production, Abaca farming, organic rice farming, dairy goat raising, duck raising, cattle fattening, Tilapia fish cage farming, Cardava banana farming and growing of corn, sorghum and vegetables.
These are some of the livelihood projects Maranao leaders and farmers have chosen to undertake in their respective areas as they expressed support to the initiative of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to address the high poverty incidence level in Lanao del Sur.
During the 2-day Livelihood Orientation Program which started in the town of Taraka on Tuesday and ended in a forum with other town mayors and farmer leaders in Iligan City the following day, resource persons invited by MinDA presented to participants the different income earning agriculture and fisheries activities.
The most popular was the Chicken Egg Production project presented by Pilmico, an Aboitiz company which has agreed to be a private partner in the development of Lanao del Sur.
Also preferred by the Maranaos are activities they are familiar with which include Tilapia fish cage farming in Lake Lanao, rice and corn farming, Abaca farming and vegetable production.
At the end of the two-day activity yesterday, it was agreed that an exposure trip to model farms in other parts of Mindanao will be arranged for both political and farmer leaders to show them best practices.
This will be followed by an on-site technical orientation and training to upgrade the knowledge of the farmers and fishermen on new technology.
Participating in this program led by MinDA and BARMM Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform are Pilmico Feeds Corporation, CP Foods Philippines, Ultramart and iFresh Corporation, the Development Bank of the Philippines, the Federation of Goat and Sheep Raisers Association of the Philippines, Avante Agricultural Corp.
The Department of Agriculture has also pledged to provide support services and assistance for the Lanao del Sur Livelihood Program.
The field exposure will start Monday next week while the technical orientation and training will be conducted right after.
