Oustanding vegetable farmers of Mindanao will be recognized and honored on Dec. 12 during the final day of the 3-Day Mindanao Vegetable Festival in Barangay Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon.
The farmers will receive trophies from the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and a 15 cu.ft. home refrigerator from Sanden Cold Chain Systems Philippines.
There will also be an “enthronement” of “Kings” in three different vegetable categories – Carrots, Chinese Cabbage and Cabbage, three of the major crops of the IMTASULA Complex composed of the towns of Impasugong, Talakag, Sumilao and Lantapan, four towns of Bukidnon province which produce highland vegetables.
The seed companies whose farming systems and seeds produced best quality Carrots, Chinese Cabbage and Cabbage will also be honored and given trophies.
The Festival which starts today is the culmination of a season-long Mindanao Vegetable Derby sponsored by MinDA in cooperation with the Bukidnon Provincial Government under Gov. Jose Maria Zubiri and the mayors of the four towns.
The program, supported by the Department of Agriculture, private companies and non-government organizations involved in organic farming, is aimed at improving the quality of the vegetables coming from the complex by engaging seed companies in introducing their best seeds and guiding farmers on the correct farming system and practices.
The trophies and gifts are fitting tributes to the vegetable farmers of Bukidnon who supported the government’s programs to stabilize the prices of vegetable since 2018 when I engaged them as Secretary of Agriculture.
This event will recognize and honor the country’s real heroes – the farmers.
