A biomass-fueled mini-boiler which produces steam made by a Mindanao inventor has boosted the sardines and dried fish production of a grouo od women in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.
The mini-boiler designed and built by Engr. Rudy Cane, a former OFW and outstanding Mindanao inventor, produces steam to dry fish and powers a Retort Machine which cooks sardines.
The mini-boiler, Steam Fish Dryer and Retort Machines were funded by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) as part of the Mindanao Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MinFAD) Program.
MinFAD aims to boost fisheries production and generate income opportunities in the fisheries sector by providing practical interventions, including ice makers and blast freezers.
Nasipit Mayor Enrico Corvera thanked MinDA for the mini-boiler, steam powered fish dryer and retort machine.
Gina Dueñas, President of Ata atahon Rural Improvement Club composed of 42 women members, said the steam-powered fish dryer machine has increased their produce from 80-kg to up to 250-kg per day.
The retort machine, on the other hand, has increased their bottled sardines production from 300 to 600 bottled sardines in 3 hours.
Before the installation of the retort machine, they only produced 75 bottled sardines in 1.5 hours using pressure cooker.
Earlier, Olutanga town also received a mini-boiler, steam-powered dryer and a vacuum packing machine for dried fish production.
MinDA targets 22 fishing communities in Mindanao to be served by the MinFAD program.
