On the second-day of our two-day journey in Agusan del Sur and Misamis Oriental for Sorghum harvest and silage-making demonstration, veteran ruminants fattener Arnel Corpuz continued his actual farm demo on how to prepare the perfect silage.
In Naawan, Misamis Oriental last Tuesday, Arnel, an outstanding OFW who spent 11 years in Australia managing a 50,000-head Wagyu Feedlot, showed how the Sorghum stalks and leaves should be ideally chopped.
He also demonstrated the proper compaction or vacuum-packing of the silage to make it last for up to five years in storage.
The secret to perfect silaging, Arnel said, is in ensuring that there is no oxygen in the silage dump of in the silage bag because oxygen would reduce the silage into garbage.
Another important advice he shared was to make sure that in feeding goats, sheep, cattle and carabao, the silage must be consistent.
This means that if the silage is made from Sorghum stalks and leaves, that should be consistently the feed given to the animals.
Changing the feeds every now and then will adversely affect the health of the animals, Arnel said.
This means that if your silage is Sorghum, that should be the feeds that should be given to the animals consistently.
Any change in the feed materials must be done gradually so as not to cause an imbalance in the rumen of the animals which could affec their health.
