Local invention! Steam-Powered Fish Dryer Installed in Olutanga Island

A steam-powered fish dryer designed and built by one of Mindanao’s leading inventors is now helping the fisherfolk of Olutanga Island produce clean and good quality dried fish.
The steam which provides heat for the fish dryer comes from a biomass-fueled mini-boiler designed by Engr. Rudy Cane of Butuan City, one of Mindanao’s outstanding inventors.
Olutanga Mayor Arthur Ruste reported that the dryer which operates using both natural heat from the sun and from a bio-mass fed boiler which produces hot steam has greatly helped the community.
He said the town will now start the mass production of dried Balo, Danggit and Lumayagan, the local name for small squid.
The dried fish will be vacuum-packed and will carry the brand name Olutanga Dried Fish.
The distribution by MinDA of the biomass boiler-powered steam fish dryer is part of its practical interventions to address poverty while boosting productivity in Mindanao.
A total of 26 fishing communities will receive the same facilities under the EU-funded MinPAD Rise Program.
